FRESH vs FROZEN VEGGIES

A common belief of foodies is that fresh is best! Don’t get me wrong I love fresh veggies and enjoy a weekly trip to the farmers market to grab some deep green zucchini and bright yellow squash, but “best” is subjective. The shelf life of fresh veggies from the grocer is what, 1-2 days?

As a working woman with 2 boys and a husband to feed, I don’t have time to run back and forth to the grocer for fresh vegetables every time I cook. However, my meals will always include a veggie (sorry kids). I got wise and started grabbing bagged frozen veggies and guess what!

- Frozen veggies are picked at the peak of their ripeness and hold on to more of their nutritional value than fresh

- Fresh veggies lose a lot of nutritional value during transportation from harvest to the store

- Frozen fruits and veggies go great in protein smoothies and eliminate the need to crush up ice

Items I most always grab frozen

- broccoli

- Spinach/kale

- corn

- green beans

-strawberries/blueberries

Items I most always buy fresh but in moderation (1-2 at a time)

-squash/zucchini

-asparagus

-Peppers

-banana

Supplementing meals for nutritious whole food smoothies is a great habit to have!

Rule of thumb: 1 Liquid, 1 Protein, 1 Veggie, 1 Fat, 1 Fruit

Protein Smoothie Recipe

-1 scoop vanilla whey protein

-1 banana

-1 tbsp frozen chopped spinach

-1 tbs coconut oil

-add in a booster

-oats

-chia

-flax seed
